Christmas Trees Eaten By What?

I bet you didn't know this!

🌲 What Happens to All Those Trees?

Real Christmas trees have been a fading theme over the past few decades according to the US Census Bureau, with artificial tree imports rising to their highest rates ever over the past two years, and real trees cut shrinking 27% between 2002 and 2017.

While many may find this fact comforting, thinking more trees are being saved to grow into large forests isn’t the case. Many Christmas tree farms are beginning to reduce in size, especially in the state of Oregon which is the United States’ leader in Christmas trees, providing around 1/3 of the nation’s trees.

But it isn’t all doom and gloom when it comes to real trees because what is being done with them post-holiday season is refilling our hearts with Christmas spirit, even two weeks past the holiday.

Those who opted for real trees on Martha’s Vineyard had a chance to do some good with their firs, by helping dune restoration efforts. Or how about in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Allegheny Goatscape is helping to popularize feeding your discarded tree to goats as a delicious snack? Goats aren’t the only ones that are eating well on the farm as some have opted to let alpacas and llamas enjoy the delicacy. Finally, we end our creative recycling journey at the Berlin Zoo where the festive firs have been getting devoured by elephants and bison.

It goes to show, that no matter your place in this world, a Christmas tree is sure to bring you a smile!
